Ranges: composite measure phrases, modified numerals, and choice functions

چکیده
Range expressions such asbetween 3 and 8,from to 8, and3 through 8 resemble modified numerals asat least 3and have sometimes been mentioned under that rubric. This paper shows they are crucially different in their distribution, the readings available them, behavior with respect quantifiers, more generally an intricate grammar of own. We distinguish three classes can receive: singleton punctual readings, on which often give rise ignorance inferences; set arise chiefly scope quantifiers; interval where range is interpreted exhaustively. propose analysis denote choice functions over degrees, right circumstances be parameterized.

Measure Phrase Equatives and Modified Numerals
In English, equatives can be formed with a numeral or measure phrase (MP) standard (e.g. John can dive as deep as 500m; Rett, 2010). These ‘measure phrase equatives’ (MPEs) differ semantically from their clausal counterparts (e.g. John can dive as deep as Sue can) in two important ways. First, while clausal standards set lower bounds, resulting in an ‘at least’ interpretation of the equative, M...
متن کاملModified Numerals as Post-Suppositions
The paper provides a compositional account of cumulative readings with non-increasing modified numerals (aka van Benthem’s puzzle), e.g., Exactly three boys saw exactly five movies. The main proposal is that modified numerals make two kinds of semantic contributions. Their asserted/at-issue contribution is a maximization operator that introduces the maximal set of entities that satisfies their ...
متن کاملTwo kinds of modified numerals
In this article, I show that there are two kinds of numeral modifiers: (Class A) those that express the comparison of a certain cardinality with the value expressed by the numeral and (Class B) those that express a bound on a degree property. The goal is, first of all, to provide empirical evidence for this claim and second to account for these data within a framework that treats modified numer...
متن کاملEquatives, Measure Phrases and NPIs
Standard semantic accounts of the equative ascribe it an ‘at least’ meaning, deriving an ‘exactly’ reading when necessary via scalar implicature. I argue for a particular formulation of this scalar implicature account which considers that (i) equatives license NPIs in their internal arguments, and (ii) equatives whose internal arguments are measure phrases (MPs) are, in contrast to clausal equa...
متن کاملA BORDA MEASURE FOR SOCIAL CHOICE FUNCTIONS by
The question addressed in this paper is the order of magnitude of the difference between the Borda rule and any given social choice function. A social choice function is a mapping that associates a subset of alternatives to any profile of individual preferences. The Borda rule consists in asking voters to order all alternatives, knowing that the last one in their ranking will receive a score of...
